Wikipedia:Getting started

From Wikipedia

The Burmese Wikipedia uses fully-compliant Unicode text. Although this is not in wide use in Burmese language web pages yet, it offers the best and most standardised method of entering text. (See Wikipedia:Font.)

Unfortunately it is moderately difficult to get everything working if you are not the most computer-literate person. As time goes on the process should become simpler.

[edit] Getting started viewing text in Windows

I only have access to one Windows 2000 computer, there will be many other ways of making the font display correctly in different systems. This addresses just one possible way to view the text.

Fully-complaint Unicode fonts that have been tested are:

[edit] Getting a browser that works

On Windows 2000, Internet Explorer doesn't seem to display any characters in the Myanmar section of Unicode. It can be done by setting the encoding to user-defined, but this makes it useless for displaying other characters.

Mozilla Firefox displays Burmese text completely, selecting an appropriate font automatically. Firefox is a free download, and can be found on the Mozilla website.

[edit] Updating Uniscribe (usp10.dll)

Windows 2000 comes with an out-of-date version of this file. It needs to be copied into the program directory of Firefox (same as firefox.exe) to work correctly. I believe this file is updated in Windows XP.
